Of all the learning activities my homeschooled kiddos have done over the years, the first they’ll recall to anyone who asks for their favourite memories will be ‘edible science’. We did so much learning through our taste buds that I wrote a whole blog post on it HERE. Maybe it’s just my family, but make a lesson edible and they seem to be able to remember it forever! It definitely bumps up the fun factor and maybe the memory of it too because it is such a novelty. Never underestimate the power of novelty in your child’s learning journey. Here are some ways to incorporate this sense into your child’s learning journey.
We see how well and how quickly babies and toddlers learn through their sense of taste. They begin to distinguish sweet from sour. They can tell cold from warm through and will often play with their food in their mouths long before they take a bite. Tasting is a great mode of learning.
Examples of How To:
Think about adding in some edible activities into your learning. Pinterest has lots of ideas if you get stuck. I would often think about something the kids needed or wanted to learn and then would search for edible ideas in Google. Thinking about incorporating food into our learning has been a helpful tool. Ask yourself, is there a way we can build this, bake this or make this out of food?
For some neurodiverse learners, having something to chew on like a special chewy necklace, chewing gum or even sucking on a boiled lolly can be a soothing experience while they learn. It seems to help to calm the nervous system and enable a child to absorb more information.
Creating a rhythm of a tea-time read aloud has been a special part of our homeschooling life. We set up a few snacks, a pot of herbal tea and while I read aloud, the kids snack and drink. It is a special little part of our learning journey and again, one that my children seem to recall very fondly.
