Halloween is a time of year filled with lollies, chocolate, treats and anything sweet, and while the kids love that part of the tradition, sometimes it is nice to have a break from the sugar.
Finding things for your kids to do that doesn’t involve trick-or-treating can be difficult and time consuming, so we’ve put together a list of 5 fun activities for Halloween that aren’t trick-or-treating.
Here we go..
1. Pumpkin Carving
There’s nothing better than getting your hands dirty and covered in vegetable insides than with some pumpkin carving! You can buy carving pumpkins from many grocery stores, farmers markets and local fruit shops. And for an extra bit of fun, you can have your kids design their own patterns, or you can download many free ones online
What do you need to carve pumpkins?
- A pumpkin (of course), but if you can’t find a pumpkin, watermelons work well too
- A cloth or a towel, or something else to keep your surface clean
- A spoon to scoop out the insides
- A sharp paring knife (or a Pumpkin carving set if you really want to get into it!)
- A pen or texter to draw the pattern
Pro tip: gently hammer a cookie cutter into the pumpkin to create the shape, then push it out from the inside and use a paring knife to get anything left behind.
2. Painting a Pumpkin
Not keen on getting everyone dirty from the pumpkin insides? No problem! Many craft stores and $2 shops sell clay or plastic pumpkins that you can paint. If you choose to paint a real pumpkin, make sure you use one that is room temperature. If it’s cold from the fridge the condensation will make it hard to paint.

- A cloth or a towel, or something else to keep your surface clean
- Paint and paint brushes
